Tri-County Pest Control Q&A: German Cockroaches

 In News

Hi folks and welcome to our latest edition of a Tri-County Pest Control Q&A. Today, we’re going to discuss German Cockroaches. These pests are more prevalent in the winter months because they cannot survive the extreme cold. Let’s learn more about them now.

Where can German cockroaches be found? These pests are most readily found near restaurants, food processing plants, hotel and even buildings such as nursing homes.

Why do they congregate near these types of establishments? Because they are highly attracted to meat products, starchy, sugary and fatty foods. In some extreme cases, where there is no food to be found, they will also go after items such as soap and toothpaste.

Why are we more likely to see them during colder, winter months as opposed to summer? These types of pests cannot survive severe cold and will die unless they can find their way into warmer climates.

How do they get into businesses and homes in the first place? They will find their way in via grocery bags, boxes and even secondhand appliances. It is important to keep them away from food sources, because they can spread bacteria.

What is the easiest way to prevent German cockroaches? Keep your counters and floors clean and free of food particles. Vacuum your floors regularly and keep your bathrooms clean and disinfected.
