Wacky Pest Wednesday: Housefly

 In News

Happy Wednesday, Tri-County Pest Control fans, and welcome to our latest edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday!  Today we invite you to join us today as we cover a very typical house pest: the housefly. Enjoy!

Oh the housefly—one of the most commons pests on the spectrum, right next to the cockroach.  Depicted in everything from cartoons to movies (ever seen The Fly?), these pests just stink.  Literally!

Anything rotten, smelly, or decaying makes for a great meal for these pests, which is why they are known as one of the most disgusting animals on the planet.  While they love trash, it won’t stop them from landing onto fresh food for a quick meal, but when they do, they bring with them all sorts of bacteria that they picked up from rotting food, making them a health threat as well.  If you are not convinced that flies are disgusting, just know that in order for them to eat, houseflies have to regurgitate their saliva onto food to break it down and then slurp it all back up. They are disgusting by every sense of the word.

Your best defense against these nasty guys is to keep trash out of the home—that means no trash bags being left in the garage or other rooms.  Keep your kitchen tidy and put leftovers away in a timely manner. In addition, try to limit the amount of time you have doors and windows open, as once a passing fly smells food, they’ll come swarming in.  Since one female housefly can lay up to 150 eggs at once, your fly infestation can go from small nuisance to major problem in as little as 5 days.
