Wacky Pest Wednesday: Birds

 In News

Happy Wednesday to all you Tri-County Pest Control fans out there!  We’re back with yet another edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday, and this week, we’re covering an animal that is not commonly thought of as a “pest”, yet can still cause damage to your home and family: birds.

“Birds?  Why is a pest control company talking about birds?” you may ask yourself.  Birds are generally not your common household pest, but some will try to make a nest in your home, and some can even carry different types of disease (avian flu, anyone?).  With the weather starting to drop, more and more birds will be looking to build their nests, and some might even pick your home as a prime nesting spot.  Dryer vents, attics, porches chimneys, and other crevices make a prime location for a bird nest, so don’t be surprised to find a nest here or there.

Likewise, if your dryer starts to produce less and less heat during these next few months, don’t immediately think that the dryer itself is malfunctioning.  Check the dryer vent, as a bird nest could be blocking airflow.

Deterring birds from nesting in your home can be quite the challenge, as different birds will respond differently to various defense methods.  However, we find that placing a plastic hawk somewhere in your yard–preferably high up–can to wonders to stop birds from nesting in your home.

Should you find a bird nest in your home, complete with eggs, don’t immediately destroy it; removing a nest of a migratory bird can be a federal offense, and may come with many legal consequences.  You are way better off to call in the pros, and have us identify the bird that the nest belongs to, and then remove it.  Besides, contrary to popular belief, bird nests are very nasty–they can be littered with bird droppings, mites, bedbugs, fleas, chiggers, and disease, just to name a few.  In addition, birds are extremely delicate creatures, and should be handled with the utmost care to remove them, as they are also a very important aspect in the local ecosystem.

When it comes to pest control, there is always more than what meets the eye.  We are not in the business of eliminating pests, but safeguarding your home from many different critters that can have an impact your family.

Give us a call today to have your home protected.
