A Pest-Free Labor Day Weekend

 In News

The Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer for most. The kids will be going back to school, the leaves will begin to change, and fall will really descend upon us. However, even though the summer season is coming to a close, pests everywhere are still on the hunt for you and your family, and a Labor Day Weekend barbecue makes for a prime target. So, to keep the pests out of your festivities, we’ve provided a short list of things you can do to keep bugs down to a minimum this weekend.

Mosquitoes are one of the most active pests this time of year, and the recent spread of the Zika virus has caused panic in many people around our region. Although the virus itself is a while away from infecting anyone here, a mosquito bite will sure put a damper on your cookout. To help prevent mosquitoes going rampant, make sure to eliminate any standing water in your backyard, as it serves as a breeding ground. In addition, if you notice that these little buggers are coming from somewhere other than your yard, a strategically placed fan can keep them out for good. Now, when the sun goes down the mosquitoes will come out in droves, but with a few citronella candles and some bug spray, you’ll be bite-free.

Flies are also another annoying cookout pest you can encounter, and with them being a common vector of disease, it pays to keep them out of your yard. One of the easiest ways to do this is to ensure that all trash is sealed into bags, and to try your best to cover all the food outside. Flies operate mostly on smell, so by covering up everything, you limit the smell that the food gives off, keeping flies away for a while. Not only that, but make sure you clean up after your dog before people come over. It’s not just common courtesy, but picking it up will keep flies away from your yard. Besides, you wouldn’t want a fly who was just feeding on your dog’s droppings to land on your hotdog, now would you?

Pests are a part of nature, but there are simple things you can do around the home to prevent them from ruining your get-together. If you do have a lot of people coming over, or if your live in a pest-active zone (like by a marsh), then it may be in your best interest to call us for a professional treatment. This quick and easy treatment will keep the pests out for good, and leave you worry-free this weekend.

No matter how you choose to enjoy your Labor Day Weekend, we hope that you enjoy it and stay pest-free!
