Did You Know?

Sure, pests can be pretty gross, but there are several fun facts about them that makes them—well—unique.  Check out our latest article to learn some of our favorites, some that might give you a different perspective on these creepy crawlies!

Did you know that ants don’t have lungs?  Instead, they breathe through different holes in their bodies, as they do not have the space to have organs dedicated to respiratory activity.  These holes are connected to a system of tubes, that can transport the oxygen around and disperse the carbon dioxide when the ant “exhales.”  In addition to all of this, these critters can carry up to 50 times their own body weight, thanks to their small size and therefore greater muscle cross-sectional area to body size ratio.  So the next time you see one of these guys carrying a large crumb across your kitchen floor, take the time to appreciate their strength before you give us a call!

Did you know that a cockroach can run up to three miles an hour?  This speed makes them one of the fastest pests out there, leading them to spread germs and disease throughout your home at a record pace.  Not only that, but these guys have been around for almost 300 million years.  We could only imagine what a tyrannosaurus rex had to go through to deal with an infestation.  Thankfully, your arms are long enough to reach the phone, where you can call Tri County Pest Control for an effective solution to your problem!

Finally, did you know that some termites are completely blind?  In a termite colony, the workers and the soldiers are blind, as they spend most of their time working in very dark areas, which require no need for eyesight.  The only termites that do are the reproducing ones, as they have to find new sites to nest and new partners to mate with.  In addition, if a soldier termite detects a threat, it will start to bang its head against the wall of the colony to send vibrations throughout.  Now, while this is pretty ingenious, their prehistoric warning system is no match for the high-tech methods we use.  One treatment is all you need to get them out for good.

Pests can be a nuisance, but there can also be pretty cool.  As creations of nature, you can believe that there are some pretty ingenious things that they have going for them.  So, the next time you see one in your home, try to think about all the cool things they have going for them—after giving us a call, of course.
