A Mover’s Guide to Pest Defense

 In News

Buying and moving into a new house is certainly an exciting time, but it also makes for a great time for plenty of pests to sneak in with you.  We know that buyers have a lot to juggle after closing on a house, but pest defense should also be a priority—yet it doesn’t have to be difficult!  Keep on reading for some simple ways in which new homeowners can keep their new digs pest-free!

When Packing, Look for Signs of Pests

Packing up your old things can be bittersweet, but don’t think for a second that pests won’t use those brown boxes to hitch a ride into your new home.  You’d be surprised how many infestations start by pests being unwittingly transported into a home, and a new home is certainly no exception. So, when packing up your old things, do your due diligence to ensure that whatever you’re packing doesn’t have signs of pests, like droppings, carcasses, or even the critters themselves!

Also, when unpacking, lay out a white sheet and unpack all of your things over it so you can see if any pests fall out of the box.  It only takes a pair of critters to lead to an infestation, so remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

When Moving, Close Entrance Points

Moving boxes and furniture means that doors will be wide open for an extended period of time—it’s just a fact.  However, you should try your best to limit the amount of time that the door stays open, because pests of all shapes and sizes see an open door as an opportunity.  So, instead of having the door propped open for hours, limit it to 30-minute intervals (you’ll probably want a break at that point, anyway). This, coupled in with careful packing, should greatly reduce the chance of having an infestation right off the bat.

No doubt, moving in a new home can be stressful, which may make it worthwhile to consult with a pest control team when moving.  That way, the pressure is off of you, and you can be ensured that the new place you are moving into is pest-free, and therefore, stress-free.  One call is all it takes to have peace of mind.
