The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug was introduced into the Allentown, PA area in the late 1990s. Since then, these pests has become a major nuisance in and around homes and have caused millions of dollars of damage to local crops. The adult insect is about three- quarters of an inch long, with a brown, marble-like exoskeleton covering its body. It is most commonly known by the unpleasant odor released when crushed or threatened. Stink bugs like to sit on the siding of homes in the fall to absorb sunlight. Then, as the temperature drops, they crawl into cracks and crevices or under the siding on the exterior of your home.
To prevent Stink Bugs from invading your home it is important to seal up cracks around your home with a high quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk. Also, replace or repair damaged screen on doors and windows. If you see stink bugs indoors, vacuum them up and throw away the bag immediately. Keep weeds around the garden in control and clean up the garden at the end of growing season.
Exterior insecticide treatments may offer some relief, but because these insects are airborne, they are difficult to control. Furthermore, they are very resistant to products used by pest professionals. Pesticides may be used to kill the bugs on contact, but chemical residuals are ineffective. Keep in mind that no product will eliminate stink bugs completely, but can reduce their presence. The most effective control programs include a combination of pesticides, exclusion, and removal.
